Shot at Fountain studios Wembley this show has become one of the most important of my career. I was able somehow to convince the 'safe' network ITV to allow me to design an edgy set ..aluminum scaffolding, girders and gantrys and the first extensive use of video screens ... .not the usual glossy floor and blue neon that the network was known for. I am very proud that the design for Pop Idol helped change the mould of the typical light entertainment scenic design that I was also responsible for perpetuating prior to this moment.
The show was an incredible success and the feeling that we where making historic TV was exhilarating, I'd experienced the same feeling in the exact same studio just a few years previously with Millionaire.
This show ultimately was the key that opened the gate to the states for me, a gate I had been shaking for many years.
